Proverbs 31:10 – 11 The Value of an Excellent Wife
Pro 31:10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
Pro 31:11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain
The reality is that the virtuous woman described in the next 19 verses is not a cheap or easy find. Likewise, where is the guy that’s a suitable match for her?! She is more precious, rare and highly valued that jewels. She is described not by physical attributes but by her virtues, her good qualities. Proverbs have already warned us about foolish women, loud women, nagging wives, or flirtatious women. Some verses from Proverbs to echo this:
Pro 12:4 An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones
Pro 18:22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.
Pro 19:14 House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
Ecc 7:28 For which my soul is still searching, but I have it not; one man among a thousand have I seen; but a woman among all these I have not seen.
Pro 3:15 She (wisdom) is of more value than jewels, and nothing for which you may have a desire is fair in comparison with her.
Pro 31:30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
It shouldn’t surprise us, that the Holy Spirit values her because she is an agent of efficiency in her work:
From verses 12-28 her virtues are a sum of her dutifulness. She stays hard at it. She does, she seeks, she brings, she rises, she considers, she dresses, she perceives, she puts, she opens, she is not afraid, she makes, she laughs, she opens her mouth with wisdom and teaching, she looks at the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
We should teach our children this model of faithfulness for both men and women to imitate. We should be reminded that this is too a picture of Jesus Christ church, his bride, and how she serves Him. March on today good Christian soldiers.
